During this lesson students will learn to create animated GIFs using a single photo. Students will learn the basic mechanics of constructing a photo GIF on photoshop using the frame animation tool, as well as developing their digital drawing skills. This is a fun lesson that has the potential to get students interested in digital art. Students experience GIFs every day through social media, this lesson gives them an opportunity to push a medium from hobby to art.
This lesson was very sucessful. Most students were excited about their work and pushed themselves to create something they were proud of. Several students mentioned the open endedness of the project allowed them to explore the narrative within their work and the relationship between the two images and fantasy/reality. All 19 students created work that interpreted these two concepts in unique ways. We discussed the relationship between GIFs and memes and how there are a lot of contemporary artists creating art using GIFs as a medium. These GIFs are elevated and push the boundaries of what a GIF is, these artists and their work can inspire students to make art even if they dislike traditional mediums.
