About Me
My name is Sarah Carlile, I am currently attending the University of North Texas pursuing a bachelors in art education and in studio ceramics with a minor in art history, and teacher certification for art k-12. I have spent six years working with ceramics, and developing a personal aesthetic within the field. I have also worked with a variety of other materials from classic oil painting to glass sculpture to printmaking. I view art as an opportunity to explore one’s inner self, and think of teaching as a way to share my passion and inspire others. I hope to assist my future students in taking risks with a wide variety of mediums. |
Philosophy
As a high school student I felt lost as far as what career I wanted to pursue. I started to look at the people around me that inspired me. I noticed the person that pushed me and inspired me most was my ceramics teacher. I decided I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. She cared about every single student she interacted with, and she helped each of us find something in her class that we could really be passionate about. I want to do this for my own students one day.
I believe all children are unique and they each deserve a positive classroom environment where they can grow not only as artists but also as human beings. For me the art room has always been a safe place that I can go to be myself and explore whatever creative endeavors I want. I want to create the same type of environment and freedom for my students. Collaboration is also very important to my teaching philosophy. My classroom will be a space were all students are invited to share their ideas, pursue their passions, and take risks.
One person I admire within the field of art education is Olivia Gude. She considers art educators to be “artist teachers” which really resonates with me. She considers students to be a medium themselves, and the teacher to be an artist of students, working with the medium to create collaborative, community art within their conversations. (GAEA 2014 interview) I also appreciate her attention to the kinds of art and artists she shows to her students. I want every student in my class to be able to find an artist in my class they fell connected to, and that can not happen if we only look at one kind of artist.
